How to Choose the Perfect Size for a Wristwatch

The wristwatch is more than just a functional accessory: it’s a statement of style and personality.

One of the most critical factors in finding the right watch is selecting the perfect size. An ill-fitted watch can either overpower your wrist or look too small, undermining your overall look.

So how can you choose the ideal size for your wristwatch?
Here some suggestions:

1. Understand Watch Dimensions

When considering the size of a watch, several key measurements come into play:

  1. Case Size/Diameter: The width of the watch face, measured across the dial. Typical sizes range from 28mm to 50mm.
  2. Case Thickness: The depth of the watch, affecting its overall bulk.
  3. Lug Width: The length between the tips of the watch’s lugs (where the strap attaches). This determines how the watch sits on your wrist.
  4. Strap Length: The width of the band or bracelet, which should complement the case size (and usually it includes it).
  5. Lug to Lug Distance: The lug-to-lug is the distance between the top top of the lug and the very bottom, as seen in the photo below. It is often confused with lug width, but this is the distance between the lugs, where the strap or bracelet is attached. These are not the same thing.

Understanding these dimensions will help you make an informed choice.

2. Measure Your Wrist Size

Before selecting a watch, measure your wrist circumference using a soft measuring tape or string. A smaller wrist typically measures under 6.5 inches (16.5 cm), while a larger wrist is above 7 inches (18 cm).
This measurement serves as a baseline for choosing the right case diameter.

Usually we suggest our clients to take a string-like object (or strip of paper) and wrap it around your wrist at the position where you'd like to wear your watch.

You can then measure the length of the string with a ruler.
After that we have a "conversion chart" that helps our customer to identify their size and to understand better the range of watches that are ideal for their wrists.

3. Match Case Diameter to Wrist Size

At Debonar Watches we use a general guideline for matching case diameter to wrist size, as per picture below.
Generally the most common matches of "Size x Watch" are:

  • Small Wrists (15.5-16.5cm): Opt for case diameters between 31mm and 36mm.
  • Medium Wrists (16.5 to 17.5 cm): Consider diameters between 34mm and 40mm.
  • Large Wrists (Over 17.5 cm): Watches with case diameters of 36mm to 44mm.

Smaller watches often appear more elegant, while larger ones tend to look bold and sporty.

. Think About Watch Style

The purpose and style of the watch also influence size selection:

  • Dress Watches: Smaller and thinner cases (34mm–40mm) with leather straps work well for formal occasions.
  • Sports Watches: Larger cases (40mm–45mm) with robust designs suit active lifestyles.
  • Vintage Watches: Often feature smaller case sizes, as trends in the past favored 34mm–38mm designs.
