How to remove and reattach the bracelet on a Vintage Rolex (to check the serial number!)
When you get your hands on a Rolex, one of the first things to do is to check the serial of the watch. But how can we do it?
Before proceeding with any steps, you have to locate the Serial Number.
The position of the serial depends on the model:
- Older Rolex Models (Pre-2005): The serial number is engraved between the lugs at the 6 o’clock position on the case. You’ll need to remove the bracelet to see it.
- Rolex Models (2005–2010): The serial number is engraved on the rehaut (inner bezel) at the 6 o’clock position.
- Rolex Models (2010 and Later): The serial number is only found on the rehaut.
If your model is one of the Vintage ones, you are going to remove the bracelet: that sounds challenging doesn't it?
Worry not, here we have some step by step info about how remove easily the bracelet (and how to put it back!).
How to Remove the Bracelet on an Older Rolex
📌 Tools Needed:
- A spring bar tool (or a small flat-head screwdriver)
- A soft cloth or tape (to protect the case lugs)
Step 1: Prepare the Watch
- Place the watch dial-down on a soft cloth or microfiber towel to prevent scratches.
- If you’re new to this, you can place masking tape on the lugs to avoid accidental damage.
Step 2: Locate the Spring Bars
- The bracelet is attached to the watch case by spring bars, small metal rods with tension-loaded ends.
- Look between the lugs at the 6 and 12 o’clock positions.
Step 3: Compress and Release the Spring Bars
- Insert the spring bar tool into the small gap where the bracelet meets the lug.
- Gently push inward to compress the spring bar while slightly pulling the bracelet away.
- Once one side is released, repeat for the other side.
- Carefully remove the bracelet and place it aside.
How to Reattach the Bracelet
📌 Steps:
- Align the Bracelet: Place one end of the spring bar into the hole on the lug.
- Compress the Spring Bar: Use the tool to push the opposite end in.
- Snap It in Place: Wiggle the bracelet slightly until you hear a small "click."
- Check for Security: Gently pull the bracelet to ensure it’s locked in properly.
🔹 Pro Tip: If you're unsure, practice on a cheap watch first or have a watchmaker do it for you!
